Description to Meursault AOC
The communal appellation named after the town with 364 hectares of vineyards is located in the Côte d'Or (Côte de Beaune) area of Burgundy. Small areas in the municipality of Blagny are also included. The town is also known as the "capital of Burgundy white wines". In Meursault, the Cistercian monks received their first vineyard as a gift from the Burgundian Duke Odo I of Burgundy (1058-1102) on Christmas Day in 1098, the year they were founded. In Meursault, the "Paulée de Meursault" is held annually on the third day of the "Trois Glorieuses" (Three Glorious Days), which goes back to the tradition of a communal meal after the grape harvest (see also under Hospices de Beaune and Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin).

Wines
Most of the wines produced are white wines made from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, which are among the best in Burgundy and are often matured in barriques. There is a saying in the municipality: "Only those who drink Meursault will never become drunkards". The red wines are made from Pinot Noir with smaller proportions of Pinot Liébault and Pinot Gris.
Premiers Crus
There are no classified Grands Crus in the Meursault appellation. The Premiers Crus cover a total of 160 hectares of vineyards. The most important of these are Bouchères, Charmes, Genevrières, Goutte d'Or, Poruzot, Perrières (Grand Cru-worthy), Pièce sous le Bois, Poruzots, Santenots and Sous le Dos d'Ane. As a speciality, there is an appellation Volnay-Santenots Premier Cru exclusively for red wines, which was already regulated in 1924. However, these vineyards are not located in the neighbouring commune of Volnay, but in Meursault. Alternative appellations are Meursault-Blagny Premier Cru for white wines from certain sites around Blagny, Meursault-Côte de Beaune for red wines only and Meursault-Santenots for white wines from Premier Cru sites in certain areas in Volnay-Santenots.
