Metsovitikos Topikos Oinos/Μετσοβίτικος Τοπικός Οίνος

Description to Metsovitikos Topikos Oinos/Μετσοβίτικος Τοπικός Οίνος

Wine-growing region named after the town of the same name (also Metsovon, Greek: Metsobo) in the Greek region of Epirus. It is located east of the capital Ioannina near the border with Albania. The area is not classified, the wines are marketed under the name Metsovitikos Topikos Oinos (country wines). Viticulture has been practised here since the mid-18th century. The vineyards are located between 900 and 1100 metres above sea level, making them the highest in Greece. As a speciality, there is also a very popular skiing area here.

From the 1960s onwards, viticulture was reorganised and foreign varieties were planted for the first time. The later Greek Foreign and Defence Minister Evangelos Averoff (1910-1990) and his winery Katogi Averoff are regarded as pioneers in this regard. Today, the international grape varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier are cultivated, as well as many indigenous Greek varieties such as Agiorgitiko, Bekari, Chlores, Glykopistrovo, Mouchtouri, Roditis and Vlachiko.
