Bourgogne Vézelay AOC

Description to Bourgogne Vézelay AOC

Regional appellation in Burgundy (France). The vineyards cover 67 hectares of vineyards in the four communes of Asquins, Saint-Père, Tharoiseau and Vezelay in the department of Yonne. Vézeley's history of more than a thousand years was founded in 858/859 with the foundation of a Benedictine abbey, which, like all Catholic orders, was intensively involved in viticulture. However, the Romans had already introduced viticulture much earlier, as evidenced by the remains of a temple dedicated to Bacchus, the god of wine, found under the church of Saint-Étienne. Only white wines exclusively from the Chardonnay variety are permitted. See also under Bourgogne and Burgundy Classification.
