Savenniéres Roche-aux-Moines AOC |
Description to Savenniéres Roche-aux-Moines AOC
The area is an enclave within the Loire appellation of Savennières. It covers 20 hectares of vineyards. Due to the special sandstone slate, volcanic rock and sand soils and exposure (sunlight), it has been classified as its own AOC. Wines from here have been known since the 12th century. The area was given to the monks of St. Nicholas Abbey by a Chevalier Buhard around the year 1130, from which the name is derived (Moines = monk's rock). The white wine is made from the pure Chenin Blanc variety. There is also a sparkling wine Moelleux (or Doux).
