Description to D.O. Pla i Llevant
The DO area is located on Mallorca, the largest island of the Balearic Islands, and was classified as Vino de la Tierra (country wine) in 1999 and then as the second DO area after Binissalem in 2001. It is named after the Pla de Mallorca plain in the centre, which is bordered by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and the Llevant area to the north-east on the coast, which is crossed by the Serres de Llevant mountain range. The area covers around 450 hectares in 18 municipalities. It has a typical climate influenced by the nearby Mediterranean, with an average temperature of 17 °C, cool winters and hot, dry summers with moderate rainfall.
The red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Callet, Fogoneu, Gorgollasa, Manto Negro, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo are authorised, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Giro Ros, Macabeo, Moll (Prensal), Moscatel de Grano Menudo (Muscat Blanc), Parellada and Viognier. Traditionally, they are often cultivated in low bush form, as well as wire frame cultivation. The varieties can be used in cuvées as desired.
