Description to Ajaccio AOC

Named after the birthplace of Napoleon (1769-1821), this appellation is located on the west coast of the French island of Corsica in the department of Corse-du-Sud. The vineyards cover 220 hectares of hillside vineyards on clay soil interspersed with weathered granite on a granite base. They are located in 36 communes in a semicircle around the Gulf of Ajaccio and the Gulf of Sagone. The red and rosé wines mainly produced are blended from a total of at least 60% Barbarossa, Nielluccio = Sangiovese, Sciaccarello = Mammolo (to 40%) and the white variety Malvoisie de Corse/Vermentinu (Vermentino), as well as a total of maximum 40% Grenache Noir = Garnacha Tinta, Cinsaut and Carignan Noir (Mazuelo). The white wines are made from Vermentino and a maximum of 20% Ugni Blanc = Trebbiano Toscano. Well-known producers are Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Clos d'Alzeto, Clos Ornasca, Domaine Comte Peraldi, Domaine de Pietrella.
