Description to Ajaccio AOC

The appellation, named after Napoleon's (1769-1821) birthplace of the same name, is located on the west coast of the French island of Corsica in the department of Corse-du-Sud. The vineyards cover 200 hectares of hillside vineyards on a granite base on clay soil interspersed with weathered granite. They are located in 36 municipalities in a semicircle around the Gulf of Ajaccio and the Gulf of Sagone. The mainly produced red and rosé wines are blended from a total of at least 60% Barbarossa, Nielluccio = Sangiovese, Sciaccarello = Mammolo (zum. 40%) and the white variety Malvoisie de Corse/Vermentinu(Vermentino), as well as a maximum of 40% Grenache Noir = Garnacha Tinta, Cinsaut and Carignan Noir(Mazuelo). The white wines are made from Vermentino and a maximum of 20% Ugni Blanc = Trebbiano Toscano. Well known producers are Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Clos d'Alzeto, Clos Ornasca, Domaine Comte Peraldi, Domaine de Pietrella.
