Region in the north of Portugal with the three landscapes of Beira Alta, Beira Baxa and Beira Litoral. The area, which is also classified as an IGP (regional wine), stretches from the Spanish border in the east to the Atlantic coast in the west. Viticulture has an ancient tradition here, having been cultivated in the early Middle Ages by the Benedictine and Cistercian orders in the numerous monasteries. There are the following areas in the region:
- Bairrada (DOC)
- Beira Atlântico (IGP)
- Beira Interior (DOC)
- Dão (DOC
- Encostas d'Aire (DOC)
- Lafões (DOC)
- Távora-Varosa (DOC) - centre of Portuguese sparkling wine production
- Terras da Beira (IGP)
- Terras de Císter (IGP)
- Terras do Dão (IGP)
Mainly autochthonous varieties are cultivated. The majority are white wines, which are used as base wines for sparkling wine production. The oldest and largest Portuguese sparkling wine cellar, Caves Murganheira, is located in Taoruca. Other producers include Entre Serras, Kemper Julia and Quinta da Foz do Arouce.
