Alongside Montagne, Lussac and Puisseguin, this is one of the four so-called satellite appellations of Saint-Émilion(Bordeaux), which lie directly north of the Barbanne river. The wines are authorised to bear the Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion designation of origin. As a speciality, producers can alternatively label their wines under the appellation Montagne-Saint-Émilion as Saint-Georges is part of the commune of Montagne. The appellation named after St George is the smallest of the four satellite appellations.

Vineyards & grape varieties

The vineyards cover around 200 hectares of vines. The soils consist mainly of clay and limestone formations with a proportion of sand and gravel. The red wines are predominantly blended from the Merlot variety, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pressac (Cot); Carmenère and other traditional Bordeaux varieties are also used to a lesser extent. The wines are similar to those from Saint-Émilion and are characterised by a strong structure, ripe fruitiness and good ageing potential.

Producers

Well-known producers include Château Belair-Montaiguillon, Château Belair-Saint-Georges, Château Maquin-Saint-Georges, Château Saint-Georges and Château Tour-du-Pas Saint-Georges.
