Wine regions in Thessalia / Θεσσαλία 10 growing regions
Description to Thessalia / Θεσσαλία
The landscape or region with the capital Larissa covers around 14,000 kilometres and is located on the east coast of Greece. It is known as the breadbasket of Greece; the grain fields are located in the large, flat plains. The mild climate is influenced by the 3,000 metre-high Mount Olympus (the seat of the gods in Greek mythology) on the border with Macedonia in the west and the Aegean Sea (northern tributary of the Mediterranean) in the east. The vineyards cover 11,000 hectares, of which 7,500 are table grapes and 3,500 are wine grapes. Many autochthonous grape varieties such as Batiki, Krassato, Mavro Messenikola, Savatiano, Stavroto, Roditis and Xinomavro are still cultivated. The appellations classified as POP are Anchialos, Messenikola and Rapsani.
