P.D.O. Amynteo (O.P.A.P.) / Αμύνταιο

Description to P.D.O. Amynteo (O.P.A.P.) / Αμύνταιο

Appellation named after the town of the same name (also Amyndeo or Amyntaion) in the east of the district of Florina in the Greek region of Macedonia. It is the northernmost wine-growing area in Greece. The vineyards with their characteristically sandy soil cover around 750 hectares of vines at an altitude of 570 to 750 metres above sea level. Around 50% are located between Lake Petres and Lake Vegoritida. The many bodies of water and lakes in the region play an important role in the microclimate, which is particularly favourable for viticulture.

The Amynteo POP area applies to red wine and, as an exclusive novelty for Greece, also to rosé wine and rosé sparkling wine. All varieties are made from the only authorised variety, Xinomavro (also known here as Mavro Naoussis) . They are vinified dry, semi-dry and medium sweet. Well-known producers are Alpha Estate, Amynteon Cooperative Winery, Hatzis, Kir Yianni and Pavlou Winery.
