Oltrepò Pavese DOC |
Description to Oltrepò Pavese DOC
Production area for red wines, rosé wines, white wines and sparkling wines in the Italian region of Lombardy. With 16,000 hectares of vineyards, the zone (DOC, DOCG and IGT Provincia di Pavia) is the third largest in Italy after Asti and Chianti. The Oltrepò geographical area is located in the south of the province of Pavia, on the border with Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. The total area covers almost 100,000 hectares of mostly hilly and mountainous terrain at an altitude of 300 to 400 metres above sea level. The climate is characterised by dry winters and ventilated summers, with high temperature fluctuations due to air currents rising up the slopes. The soils of the foothills consist of marine sedimentary rock with a clay component.
The area covers 16,000 hectares in 42 municipalities in the Apennine foothills on the southern bank of the Po. Around 12,000 hectares of this area are classified as DOC/DOCG. Large quantities of grapes are delivered to large spumante wineries such as Cinzano, Gancia and Martini & Rossi in Piedmont or as bulk wine to Milan for the production of mass-produced wines. With around 3,000 hectares, Oltrepò is the largest producer of the Pinot Nero variety in Italy. There are many winegrowers' co-operatives whose members cultivate small areas with an average of two hectares.
The single-varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the variety. They are mostly made secco (dry) but also amabile and dolce. The red wines are Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) - blanc de noirs and as Rosato. The white wines are Chardonnay, Cortese, Malvasia (Malvasia di Candia Aromatica), Moscato (Muscat Blanc), Riesling (Riesling Renano = Riesling and/or Riesling Italico = Welschriesling) and Sauvignon (Sauvignon Blanc).
Rosso and Rosato are blended from Croatina (25-65%), Barbera (25-65%), and Uva Rara and/or Ughetta = Vespolina and/or Pinot Nero (max. 45%), as well as other authorised varieties (max. 15%). The Bianco is made from Riesling and/or Riesling Italico (max. 60%), as well as Pinot Nero (white-pressed) and other authorised varieties (max. 40%).
A Spumante is made from Chardonnay, Cortese, Malvasia, Moscato and Pinot Nero. A Frizzante is available from Barbera, Chardonnay, Cortese, Malvasia, Moscato, Pinot Nero, Riesling and Rosato. A Superiore is only available from Riesling. A longer matured Riserva is available from the Barbera, Riesling and Rosso. And a Liquoroso is available from Moscato.
