Malvasia delle Lipari DOC |
Description to Malvasia delle Lipari DOC
DOC area for sweet white wine in the Italian region or on the island of Sicily. The zone covers only eight hectares of vineyards, mainly in the municipality of Malfa on the island of Salina; however, cultivation and vinification are permitted throughout the archipelago of the Lipari Islands (belonging to the province of Messina). The Greeks settled on the islands as early as 580 BC and cultivated vines. The Greek historian Diodorus (1st century BC) reported on a Malvasia vine. Carlo Hauner, a painter from Brescia, founded a vineyard on Salina in 1963. He thus successfully reactivated the age-old tradition of sweet dessert wines. The wine is made from the two varieties Malvasia di Lipari (92 to 95%) and Corinto Nero = Sangiovese (5 to 8%). There are also two versions, Passito, made from air-dried grapes, and a high-alcohol Liquoroso, fortified to at least 16% alcohol by volume.
