Verntea Zakynthou/Βερντεα Ζακύνθου

Description to Verntea Zakynthou/Βερντεα Ζακύνθου

The Greek island (Greek: Zakynthou) covers 400 square kilometres and is the third largest and southernmost of the Ionian archipelago. The island of Kefallonia lies to the north. In the east there are wide sandy beaches, in the west a very steep rocky coastline of up to 300 metres, with a mountain range in between. The climate is characterised by sufficient rainfall. Almost exclusively autochthonous grape varieties are cultivated here: Agiomavritiko, Areti, Asprouda, Avgoustiatis, Goustolidi, Kakotrygis, Katsakoulias, Korinthiaki, Pavlos (Malvasia Bianca Lunga) and Skiadopoulo.

Landkarte Griechenland

The traditional white wine Verdea is produced from different varieties. There are the PGE areas (country wine) Metaxata, Patras, Trifylia and Verntea Zakynthou (Verdea Zakynthos), but no appellations classified as POP (Prostatevomenis Onomasías Proelefsis) (quality wines). A large quantity of table grapes and sultanas are also produced. Well-known producers include Komoutos, Solomos, Verdea and Voultsos.
