S. Martino della Battaglia DOC |
Description to S. Martino della Battaglia DOC
DOC area for white wine in the border area of the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto at the southern end of Lake Garda. The area is named after a battlefield in the Second Italian War of Independence, where the Piedmontese defeated the Austrians in 1859. The cross-regional zone covers about 25 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Desenzano del Garda, Lonato, Pozzolengo and Sirmione in the province of Brescia (Lombardy), as well as Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona (Veneto). This makes the area one of the smallest wine-growing regions in Europe. The former name was "Tocai di San Martino della Battaglia", which had to be shortened by the " Tocai di" after Hungarian intervention (to avoid confusion with Tokaj ) following years of disputes in accordance with an EU decision.
The dry, sunny yellow wine with an almond and lemon aroma is made from at least 80% Tuchì(Sauvignonasse) and a maximum of 20% other authorised varieties. The name Tuchì applies exclusively to this DOC area, because in Friuli Venezia Giulia the variety is called Friulano and in the rest of Veneto Tai (the former name, which is no longer permitted, was Tocai Friulano). There is also a sparkling sweet Liquoroso with 15% alcohol by volume. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated followed by the vineyard name.
