P.D.O. Zitsa (O.P.A.P.) / Ζίτσα |
Description to P.D.O. Zitsa (O.P.A.P.) / Ζίτσα
Protected appellation in the district of Ioannina in the north-west of the Greek region of Epirus on the border with Albania, named after the municipality of the same name. The vineyards cover around 400 hectares of vines on barren, calcareous soil at 600 to 700 metres above sea level, most of which are fenced off to protect them from wild boar. The Kalamas river flows through the area. The dry POP white wine (dry) and the white semi-sparkling wine and sparkling wine (dry, semi-dry, medium sweet) are made from the indigenous Debina variety (also known here as Zitsa) . The rosé-coloured sparkling wine is declared and marketed as POP Amynteo. Well-known producers are Glinavos (Monastiri Zitsa) and Zoinos.
