Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise AOC |
Description to Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise AOC
AOC area for fortified sweet wine in the southern section of the Rhône wine-growing region. It covers around 500 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Beaumes-de-Venise (AOC for red wine) and Aubignan in the Vaucluse department. The wine was already praised by Pliny the Elder (23-79) in his work "Naturalis historia". According to legend, King Louis IX (1214-1270) took it with him on the 7th Crusade in 1248.
During the reign of Pope Clement V (1264-1314) in Avignon in Provence in the south of France, production was increased to meet the high demand at the papal court. The region's second vin doux naturel after Rasteau is made from pure Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Fermentation is stopped by adding ethyl alcohol. The wine must have at least 15% alcohol by volume and 110 g/l residual sugar. Well-known producers are the Vignerons de Beaumes-de-Venise (90% of production), Château du Trignon, Château Pesquié, Domaine de Durban, Domaine de la Mordorée and Domaine du Vieux Pigeonnier.
