Gavi DOCG |
Description to Gavi DOCG
DOCG area (also Cortese di Gavi) for white wine in the Italian region of Piedmont. The zone covers 1,570 hectares of vineyards in the entirety of the municipalities of Bosio, Carrosio, Gavi, Parodi Ligure, San Cristoforo and Tassarolo, as well as parts of Capriata d'Orba, Francavilla Bisio, Novi Ligure, Pasturana and Serravalle Scrivia in the province of Alessandria. Additional possible geographical indications are Costa Santo Stefano and Capanne di Marcarolo (Bosio), Monterotondo, Pratolungo and Rovereto (Gavi), and Cadepiaggio and Tramontana (Parodi Ligure). If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated (only for still wine) followed by the vineyard name.
There is documentary evidence of viticulture in Gavi as far back as 972. In the 1950s, Vittorio Soldati created "Gavi di Gavi" on his La Scolca estate, which became a cult wine in the 1970s. The wine received DOC status in 1974, was elevated to DOCG rank in 1998 and most recently expanded with additional wine types in 2010. The wine is made from pure Cortese grapes (here also Courteisa). Of the still wine, there is also a higher-alcohol, longer-aged Riserva. In addition, there are the sparkling wine types Frizzante, Spumante and Spumante Metodo Classico Riserva.
