Beaujolais France
Coteaux du Lyonnais AOC
Coteaux du Lyonnais AOC |
Description to Coteaux du Lyonnais AOC
The appellation forms the southernmost part of the Beaujolais area and belongs to Burgundy. Wine was already being cultivated here in Roman times. In the 16th century the area experienced a period of prosperity. In 1836, 13,500 hectares of vineyards were recorded in the land register. Due to the phylloxera catastrophe in the last third of the 19th century and urbanisation, there was an extreme reduction. Today, the vineyards cover only 375 hectares in 49 communes of the Département Rhône and extend from Lyon to the beginning of the Côtes du Rhône area. The wines are very similar to those from the Beaujolais. The rosé and red wines are made from Gamay, the white wines from Chardonnay and Aligoté. Well known producers are Pierre Jomard, Domaine de Petit Fromentin, Domaine de la Petite Gallée, Domaine de Sainte-Agathe and Cave de Sain-Bel.
