Description to D.O. Alicante
DO area on the Mediterranean coast Costa Blanca (white coast) in the Spanish region Valenciana. About 75 kilometres northeast of Alicante, on the peninsula of Dénia, is the later affiliated subzone La Marina Alta, where mainly sweet wines are produced. The vineyards of the Alicante Clásico subzone are located to a lesser extent around the port city of Alicante, but four-fifths of them are inland at an altitude of 500 to 650 metres above sea level. The vineyards cover about 14,500 hectares on mostly dark limestone soils with a low percentage of clay. The climate, mild in summer and winter, is humid and Mediterranean near the coast and continental inland. Humidity is high all year round.
The most important red wine varieties are Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha T inta (also Alicante) Garnacha Tintorera, Girò, Merlot, Monastrell, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Syrah. The most important white wine varieties are Airén, Chardonnay, Macabeo, Merseguera, Moscatel de Alejandría or Moscatel Romano (Muscat d'Alexandrie), Planta Fina (Damaschino), Sauvignon Blanc and Verdil. A speciality is the blended red wine Fondillón, which is partly produced using the solera method. For blends, the technique of doble pasta is still common. Well-known producers are Boscope, Enrique Mendoza, El Sequé, Gutiérrez de la Vega and Telmo Rodríguez. In addition, Alicante is also the name part of many grape variety names.
