The "Rabl - Kamptal Winery" is located in the wine town of Langenlois in the wine-growing region of Kamptal(Lower Austria). It was mentioned in wine-growing documents as early as 1750. The winery was taken over by Rudolf Rabl sen. in 1975, son Rudolf jun. joined the business in 1986, showing responsibility for vinification. The vineyards cover 80 hectares in the Käferberg, Kittmannsberg, Liss, Schenkenbichl, Spiegel, Steinhaus, Steinmassl and Weißes Kreuz vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Welschriesling, Frühroter Veltliner,Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Rivaner (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller and Traminer, as well as with the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Blauburger, St. Laur ent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The vineyards are cultivated according to the KIP (Controlled Integrated Production) guidelines. Quality criteria are short pruning, careful, vine-specific foliage work for better exposure to sunlight and ventilation, as well as yield reduction through thinning.
In the cellar, which is seven metres underground, tradition is combined with modern technology. Depending on the grape variety or wine type, the grapes are either destemmed or, in some cases, pressed whole. In principle, spontaneous fermentation and long contact with the must are practised. Fermentation takes place at 20 to 21 °Celsius, the fermentation period is between two and four months. Depending on the variety and wine type, the wines are matured in stainless steel tanks, in large wooden bar rels or in barriques and are bottled at the optimal stage of maturity. The top line is "Vinum Optimum", under which some of the varieties are marketed. They are labelled with the grape variety and then V.O. - for example, "Grüner Veltliner V.O." Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners are produced as Kamptal DAC and Kamptal DAC Reserve respectively. In years with suitable weather conditions, Prädikat wines such as Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen are also pressed. Bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced. Around 50% of the production is exported to many European countries, as well as to the USA, Canada and the Philippines.
