The winery "Rabl - Kamptal Winery" is located in the wine town of Langenlois in the wine-growing region of Kamptal(Lower Austria). It was mentioned in viticultural records as early as 1750. The business was taken over by Rudolf Rabl Sr. in 1975, and his son Rudolf Jr. joined the business in 1986 and is responsible for vinification.
The vineyards cover 80 hectares of vines in the Käferberg, Kittmannsberg, Liss, Schenkenbichl, Spiegel, Steinhaus, Steinmassl and Weißes Kreuz vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Welschriesling, Frühroter Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Rivaner (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller and Traminer, as well as the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Blauburger, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir).
The near-natural, sustainable production is carried out according to the certified criteria of Nachhaltig Austria. The quality criteria include short pruning, careful, vine-specific foliage care for better sunlight and ventilation, as well as yield reduction through thinning out.
In the wine cellar, seven metres underground, tradition is combined with modern technology. Depending on the grape variety or wine type, the grapes are destemmed or in some cases whole-cluster pressed. In principle, spontaneous fermentation and long maceration are practised. Fermentation takes place at 20 to 21 °Celsius and the fermentation period is between two and four months. Depending on the variety and wine type, the wines mature in stainless steel tanks, large wooden barrels or barriques and are bottled at the optimum stage of maturity.
The top line is "Vinum Optimum", under which some of the varieties are marketed. They are labelled with the grape variety and then V.O. - for example "Grüner Veltliner V.O." Rieslings and Grüner Veltliner are produced as Kamptal DAC and Kamptal DAC Reserve respectively. In years with suitable weather conditions, Prädikat wines such as Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen are also produced. Bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced. Around 50% of the production is exported to many European countries, as well as to the USA, Canada and the Philippines.
