Chinon AOC |
Description to Chinon AOC
The municipal appellation is located in the southwest of the Touraine area in the French wine region of the Loire. It is named after the medieval town of the same name. Above Chinon, on a rocky outcrop, there was a castle where Joan of Arc (1412-1431) was first mentioned in 1429 with King Charles VII. (1422-1461). A white wine of the Chenin Blanc variety was already the favourite wine of the famous Franciscan monk and poet François Rabelais (1495-1553). He relentlessly denounced the evils of church and state in a satirical way. His main work is the adventure novel "Gargantua and Pantagruel" (see also under quotations)
The terraced vineyards with gravel, sand and limestone soils cover 2,200 hectares of vineyards at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers. The red wine, mostly aged in oak, is made from Cabernet Franc (here Breton) and Cabernet Sauvignon (max. 10%). In small quantities there is a rosé from the same varieties and a white wine from Chenin Blanc. Well-known producers are Philippe Alliet, Bernard Baudry, Domaine de Bel Air, Donatien-Bahuaud, Christophe Berton, Domaine du Carroi Portier, Couly-Dutheil, Château de la Grille, Charles Joguet, Jean-Maurice Raffault and Domaine du Raffault.
