Attikos Topikos Oinos/Αττικός Τοπικός Οίνος

Name (Attikē, formerly Actaea) for the Greek landscape or region on the south-eastern peninsula of Greece, covering almost 3,800 km², in which the capital Athens is located. Attica, together with the island of Euboea (Ewwia in modern Greek) immediately to the east and the neighbouring region of Boeotia (Viotia or Vöotia) to the north, is known as Central Greece or, more commonly, Central Greece.

History

The area was colonised around 2,000 BC by the Ionians from the northern Balkans. They were the most advanced tribe of the Greeks, who achieved great prosperity and cultural prosperity in poetry (Archilochos and Homer), architecture and the visual arts (Ionian style) due to their proximity to the Orient. In the 9th century BC, they were forced by the Dorians onto the Ionian islands named after them (Kefallonia, Corfu, Zakynthos) and onto the coast of Asia Minor in Turkey. On the mainland, they only remained on Attica and Euboea.

Wine production

Around a third of all Greek wine is produced here. In contrast to the other Greek wine-growing regions, only very few grape varieties are cultivated due to the warm and dry climate. The white wine variety Savatiano dominates around 90% of the vineyards. It is the standard variety for the famous resin wine Retsina, which is produced here in truly huge quantities. Almost all the rest is covered by the white wine variety Roditis, which is mainly used as a blending partner in cuvées. However, international varieties are gaining ground.

There are no POP areas. Large quantities of PGE wines (country wine = Topikos Oinos) are produced in red, white and rosé. Well-known producers are Cambas, Château Matsa, Evharis, Hatzimichalis, Kokotos, Kourtakis and Strofilia.
