Description to P.D.O. Goumenissa (O.P.A.P.) / Γουμένισσα

Appellation north-west of Thessaloniki in the south-west of the district of Kilkis in the Greek region of Macedonia. After most of the vineyards were destroyed by phylloxera in 1917, it was not until the 1970s that there was a revival. The Boutari winery made a decisive contribution to this through the national and international distribution of wines, as well as the successful endeavour to achieve OPAP classification in 1979.

The vineyards cover 320 hectares at the foot of Paiko (1,650 metres) at over 150 metres above sea level. A further 250 hectares lower down are not allowed to use the name. The maritime-continental climate is characterised by warm summers and cool winters. The dry POP red wine is made from the indigenous varieties Xinomavro and Negoska (here also Goumenissas Mavro; 20%); joint maceration and fermentation is mandatory. Producers include Aidarinis, Arhontaki, Boutari, Chatzivaritis, Eftihdi, Kelesidis, Tatsis, Ligas and Titos.

In this section you will find
