Haut-Poitou AOC

Description to Haut-Poitou AOC

The appellation named after the city of Poitiers is located in the French wine region of the Loire, south of the two appellations Anjou and Saumur. The former VDQS area (until 1989 called Vin du Haut-Poitou) was classified as AOP in 2010. In the Middle Ages, the wines were better known than those from Bordeaux and were exported in large quantities to England via the port of La Rochelle. The vineyards cover around 800 hectares of vines at an altitude of 80 to 130 metres above sea level in almost 50 communes. The white wines are blended from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The red and rosé wines are blended from Pinot Noir, Gamay, Merlot, Malbec(Cot), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay Teinturier de Chaudenay and Grolleau Noir. Well-known producers are Domaine la Tour Beaumont, Robert Champalou, Gérard Descoux, Cave du Haut-Poitou, Jacques Morgreau, Domaine de la Rôtisserie and Domaine de Villemont.
