D.O. Cigales
D.O. Cigales |
Description to D.O. Cigales
The DO area named after the town of the same name is located in the Spanish region of Castilla y León to the west of the DO area of Ribera del Duero. It comprises around 2,900 hectares of vineyards in 12 municipalities, mostly on slopes and terraces. The continental climate is characterised by hot summers and cold winters. Clairet was already being produced here in the Middle Ages. Rosé wines (Rosados) account for two thirds of production. They are made from the red wine varieties Tinto del País (Tempranillo, at least 60%) and Garnacha Tinta as well as the white wine varieties Verdejo, Viura (Macabeo), Palomino and Albillo and are aged briefly in barrels. They are labelled Cigales Nuevo on the back label. The red wines are blended from Tinto del País (at least 85%) and Garnacha Tinta, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon in some cases.
