Colli Euganei DOC |
Description to Colli Euganei DOC
DOC area for red wines and white wines in the Po Valley in the Italian region of Veneto. The wine was already sung about in the 14th century by the poet Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), who retreated here and cultivated vines. The area covers around 1,300 hectares of vineyards on volcanic and highly calcareous mountain slopes with the 603-metre-high Monte Venda to the southwest of Padua. This includes the municipalities of Arquà Petrarca, Galzignano Terme and Torreglia, as well as parts of the municipalities of Abano Terme, Baone, Battaglia Terme, Cervarese Santa Croce, Cinto Euganeo, Due Carrare, Este, Lozzo Atestino, Monselice, Montegrotto Terme, Rovolon, Selvazzano Dentro, Teolo and Vò in the province of Padova.
The single-varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. The white wines are Chardonnay, Garganega, Manzoni Bianco, Moscato (Muscat Bl anc), Pinot Bianco (Pinot Bl anc), Sauvignon (Sauvignon Blanc) and Tai (Sauvignonasse). The red wines are Cabernet (Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot (also as Novello) and Raboso (Raboso Piave and/or Raboso Veronese).
The white wine Bianco is blended from the varieties Garganega (to. 30%), Tai and/or Sauvignon (to. 30%), Moscato Bianco and/or Moscato Giallo = Goldmuskateller (5-10%), as well as other varieties (max. 30%). The red wine Rosso is produced from the varieties Merlot (40-80%), Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère (20-60%), as well as Raboso Piave and/or Raboso Veronese (max. 10%). A Spumante is produced from the wine types Bianco, Moscato, Serprino (Glera) and Pinello (Pinella). One Frizzante is produced from Serprino and Pinello. One Riserva with a longer ageing period is available from Rosso, as well as varietal wines from Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot and Raboso.
Made from the Moscato Giallo variety, Colli Euganei Fior d'Arancio received DOCG classification in 2011.
