Les Baux de Provence AOC |
Description to Les Baux de Provence AOC
AOC area in the west of the wine-growing region of Provence. It forms a small enclave within the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence area, to which it belonged until 1995 (red wines) and 2005 (white wines) before it became independent. The area can be considered a Grand Cru with stricter regulations. As the first French appellation, only wines from biodynamic viticulture are permitted here. The vineyards on the Alpilles hills south of Avignon cover 300 hectares of vines in the eight communes of Les Baux-de-Provence, Fontvieille, Maussane-les-Alpilles, Mouriès, Paradou, Eygalières, Saint-Etienne-du-Grès and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
The red wines and rosé wines, which are produced at 90% half each, are blended from the varieties Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Mourvèdre (Monastrell) and Syrah, and a maximum of 40% Cinsaut, Counoise, Carignan Noir (Mazuelo) and Cabernet Sauvignon. For the white wines produced in small quantities, the varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca), Marsanne, Roussanne, Sauvignon Bl anc, Sémillon, Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano Toscano) and Vermentino are permitted. Well-known producers are Mas de la Dame, Mas de Gourgonnier, Domaine Olivier d'Auge, Domaine de Trévallon and Domaine de la Vallongue.
