Description to Schaffhausen

Canton with the capital of the same name in the north-east of Switzerland. The vineyards cover about 500 hectares of vineyards in over 20 municipalities and belong to the wine region of German-speaking Switzerland. There are the five sub-areas Klettgau with Beringen, Gächlingen, Hallau (here lies the largest contiguous vineyard area in German-speaking Switzerland with 150 hectares), Löhningen, Oberhallau, Osterfingen, Siblingen, Trasadingen and Wilchingen; Schaffhausen; Schaffhausen surroundings with Altdorf SH, Bibern SH, Dörflingen and Thayngen; upper part of the canton with Stein am Rhein (where the Rhine flows out of Lake Constance again); and lower part of the canton with Buchberg and Rüdlingen. Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) clearly dominates 80% of the vineyards. Other varieties are Riesling x Sylvaner (Müller-Thurgau), Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Räuschling and Kerner. There are about 900 micro winegrowers, most of whom supply to winegrowers' cooperatives. These produce 85% of the wines. A speciality are the "Goldsiegel Spätlese", where the grape harvest takes place at the earliest ten days after the main harvest. Well-known producers are Bad Osterfingen (Meyer family), Baumann, GVS Schachenmann, Rimuss- und Weinkellerei Rahm, and Schlatter.
