Coteaux du Giennois AOC |
Description to Coteaux du Giennois AOC
Appellation on the upper course of the Loire north of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The name is derived from the town of Gien. The former VDQS Côtes de Gien was only classified in 1998. It comprises about 180 hectares of vineyards on limestone and flint soils. Of the 16 communes, eight in the Département Nièvre have the right to the appellation name Coteaux du Giennois Cosne-Sur-Loire. About 70% of the wines are fruity red wines with low tannins and rosé wines from Gamay and Pinot Noir (maximum 80% each). The white wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc. Well-known producers are Joseph Balland-Chapuis, René Berthier and Paul Paulat.
