Description to Lessona DOC
DOC area for red wine in the Italian region of Piedmont. The zone covers 18 hectares of vineyards on gravelly soil in the municipality of Lessona in the province of Biella. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated followed by the name of the vineyard. The wine was already known in the 14th century. In 1870, in connection with the conquest of Rome, it received the patriotic designation "Vino d'Italia" when the then Minister of Finance Qunitino Sella (1824-1887), at a banquet with this wine, made a toast to the unification of Italy. It is made from Spanna = Nebbiolo (85%) and Bonarda Novarese = Uva Rara and/or Vespolina (max. 15%). The maturing period is at least 22 months of which 12 months in wooden barrels. For the Riserva, 46 months, of which 30 months in wooden barrels, are mandatory.
