About Weingut Graf von Kanitz

The traditional winery is located in the municipality of Lorch in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. It was first mentioned in the 13th century. It was only given its present name in the 1920s by Carl-Albrecht Graf von Kanitz. He inherited it from the Prussian minister Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein (1757-1831), whose family had owned the estate since the 16th century. Today, it is owned by Sebastian Graf von Kanitz, and Jens Pape is the manager.

The steep vineyards cover 15 hectares of vineyards on stony Devonian and Taunus slate soils in the Lorch sites Bodental-Steinberg, Kapellenberg, Krone, Pfaffenwies and Schlossberg. Around 95% of the area is classified as "Erste Lage" and thus complies with the regulations for the Erstes Gewächs wine level. They are mainly planted with Riesling, as well as some Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer. The vineyards have been cultivated according to the rules of organic viticulture since 1968. After a three-year conversion phase, the winery has been a member of the organic association ECOVIN since 1992. Since the 2014 vintage, the wines have been produced vegan without the use of animal products. In years with suitable weather conditions, noble sweet wines are also pressed. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble spirits (yeast) are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates)
