The winery is located in the municipality of Merdingen (Tuniberg area) in the German wine-growing region of Baden. It was founded in the 1970s by the brothers Bernhard, Franz and Paul Mathis under the name "Kalkbödele", the original name being derived from the predominant soil type here. The business, which was managed by Sonja Mathis-Stich for many years, has been run by her son Severin Stich and his partner Sabeth Sedlatschek under the name "Gebrüder Mathis" since 2020. The company motto is: Our shared dream is simply outlined: Satisfaction from working with nature.

The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vines at single vineyard Bühl (Merdingen). They are planted with the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Pinot Gris, as well as the red wine variety Pinot Noir.

According to the company's own principle of "quality is created in the vineyard", by far the largest part of the effort is spent on natural, environmentally friendly cultivation. Biodiversity (species diversity) is promoted and habitats for insects and birds are created with hedges, sowing, birdhouses, insect hotels and life towers. Since the 2023 vintage, this has been done according to certified organic viticulture rules. Through selective hand-picking, only physiologically ripe and healthy grapes are processed.

The cellar work is based on the non-invasive principle with as little intervention as possible (as much as necessary, as little as possible). All wines are fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's own wines. Depending on the type of wine, the white wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks, tonneau barrels or barrique barrels. The red wines mature for up to 18 months, mostly in barrique barrels. Around 80% of the wines are bottled without filtration.
The range also includes two sparkling wines made using the traditional bottle fermentation method, as well as a mash-fermented white wine cuvée "Cirque des levures", which matures for 8 months in clay amphorae.
