The producers' association, based in Ehrenhausen, at the gateway to the South Styrian Wine Route, is named after the important promoter of Styrian viticulture
Archduke Johann (1782-1859). One of his sayings became the company motto:
"Faithful to the good old, but therefore no less receptive to the good new". Already in 1916 a group of Styrian winegrowers acquired the historic wine cellar of Ehrenhausen Castle. The hundredth anniversary could thus be celebrated in 2016. The new company building at the gateway to the South Styrian Wine Route symbolizes a modern place of winemaking and includes generous event rooms. Peter Stelzl is the managing director, the responsible cellar master is Sieghard Kugel. Around 250 winegrowers from all three
Styrian wine-growing regions cultivate a total of 180 hectares of vineyards
The white wine varieties Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sämling 88 (Scheurebe), Traminer and Muskateller, as well as the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Blauer Wildbacher are processed. During vinification, great importance is attached to environmentally conscious and quality-oriented processing using the most modern cellar technology, which is guaranteed by continuous
quality controls. The wines are marketed under the brand "Erzherzog Johann". The product range includes the lines Edition, Classic, Premium and Selection. Among others, the Styrian specialities
Klöcher Traminer and
Schilcher are also produced. In years suitable for the weather, high predicates such as
ice wine are also pressed. In addition, frizzante (sparkling wine) and bottle-fermented sparkling wine are also produced.
