Verdicchio di Matelica DOC |
Description to Verdicchio di Matelica DOC
DOC area (since 2020 only Matelica) for white wine in the Italian region of Marche. The zone covers around 300 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Cerreto d'Esi and Fabriano in the province of Ancona, as well as the municipalities of Camerino, Castelraimondo, Esanatoglia, Gagliole, Matelica and Pioraco in the province of Macerata. In addition, certain vineyards or vigna can be mentioned on the label. These are Cambrugiano, Colferraio, La Monacesca, La Valle, Mistriano, Sainale, Santa Teresola, Valbona and Vinano (Matelica), Collamato (Fabriano), as well as Del Cerro, Fogliano and San Leopardo (Cerreto d'Esi). The green-yellow wine is made from Verdicchio Bianco (max. 85%) and other authorised varieties (max. 15%). There is also a Passito and a Spumante. The Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva version was classified as DOCG in 2010. Other Verdicchio areas in Marche are Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva (DOCG) and Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi (DOC).
Following the decision of the regional consortium IMT (Istituto marchigiano di tutela vini) in September 2020, the wines of the two Verdicchio appellations Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC and Verdicchio di Matelica DOC (as Riserva both DOCG) will receive the state label. Their use is only prescribed by law for DOCG wines and is voluntary for DOC wines. The banderoles on the bottles, which are provided with alphanumeric codes, are intended to increase their traceability and efficiency in the fight against fraudulent labelling.
