Description to Friuli Aquileia DOC
DOC area (formerly also Aquileia del Friuli) for a wide range of red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia. The zone completely covers the municipalities of Aiello del Friuli, Aquileia, Bagnaria Arsa, Campolongo al Torre, Cervignano del Friuli, Fiumicello, Ruda, San Vito al Torre, Tapogliano, Visco and Villa Vicentina, as well as parts of the municipalities of Chiopris-Viscone, Gonars, Palmanova, Santa Maria la Longa, Terzo di Aquileia and Trivignano Udinese in the province of Udine. In 181 B.C. the Romans founded the colony of Aquileia, with the town that still exists today near the Adriatic coast, which gave the area its name. The northern part of the region is dominated by glacial and alluvial soils of gravelly loam and in the south by sandy loess. Due to the nearby Adriatic Sea, a mild maritime climate prevails with excellent conditions for wine growing.
The pure varietal wines are produced 100% pure from the respective variety. The white wines are Chardonnay, Friulano(Sauvignonasse), Malvasia Istriana(Malvazija Istarska), Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco(Pinot Blanc), Pinot Grigio(Pinot Gris), Riesling Renano(Riesling), Sauvignon(Sauvignon Blanc), Traminer Aromatico(Gewürztraminer) and Verduzzo Friulano. The red wines are Cabernet (Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. The latter may contain a maximum of 10% Refosco Nostrano(Refosco di Faedis) as the only exception
The Bianco is produced from Friulano (at 50%) and other authorised varieties (max. 50%). The Rosso (also as Novello) must contain at least 50% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. The Rosato is made from one or more of the authorised varieties. A Superiore with a higher alcohol content are available from the wine types Bianco, Rosso and Rosato. There is also a Chardonnay Spumante (tank fermentation) and a Chardonnay Spumante di Qualità (bottle fermentation). A Frizzante is available from the wine types Rosato, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana and Müller-Thurgau. A Riserva with longer maturation period are available from the wine types Rosso, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernt Sauvignon, Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
