Description to Mamertino DOC
DOC area (also Mamertino) for red and white wines in the Italian region of Sicily. Possibly the sweet wine from Messina called Mamertinum, mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) and appreciated by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC), was the namesake. The zone includes the municipalities of Alì, Alì Terme, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Basicò, Castroreale, Condrò, Falcone, Fiumedinisi, Furnari, Gualtieri Sicaminò, Itala, Librizzi, Mazzarrà Sant'Andrea, Merì, Milazzo, Monforte San Giorgio, Montalbano di Elicona, Nizza di Sicilia, Oliveri, Pace del Mela, Patti, Roccalumera, Roccavaldina, Rodi Milici, San Filippo del Mela, Santa Lucia del Mela, San Pier Niceto, Scaletta Zanclea, Terme Vigliatore, Torregrotta and Tripi in the province of Messina.
The Bianco (also as Riserva) is blended from Grillo and/or Ansonica = Inzolia (together to 35%, per variety to 10%), Catarratto Bianco (to 45%), as well as other permitted varieties (max. 20%). The Rosso (also as Riserva) is produced from Calabrese = Nero d'Avola (to. 60%), Nocera (to. 10%), as well as other permitted varieties (max. 40%). Grillo-Inzolia or Inzolia-Grillo is produced from these two varieties (20% each). The pure Nero d'Avola or Calabrese (also as Riserva) must consist of at least 85% of this variety.
