Description to Cairanne AOP
Classified in 2018 as an independent appellation and cru in the Vaucluse department in the southern section of the Rhône wine-growing region. Before its elevation, it was one of the communes of the Côtes du Rhône-Villages area allowed to append its name. Excavations with remains of Roman amphorae point to ancient viticulture. In the Middle Ages, the area was cultivated by the Catholic orders of the Templars and the Knights of St John. The vineyards are located on a chain of hills stretching from the foothills of the Alps to the Rhône. They cover over 1,000 hectares of vines on reddish loam with sandstone and gravel. The red wines are mainly blended from Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Syrah and Mourvèdre (Monastrell). The white wines are mainly made from Clairette, Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca) and Roussanne. Well-known producers are Domaine d'Aéria, Cave des Vignerons Réunis à Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes, Domaine Ameillaud, Domaine Brusset, Domaine l'Oratoire Saint-Martin, Domaine Rabasse-Charavin and Domaine Richaud.
