The winery is located in the community of Bernkastel-Kues (Saarallee 31) in the German Mosel wine region. The winegrowing tradition of the family goes back to the year 1636. The Prussian member of parliament Dr. Hugo Thanisch is considered the actual founder of the winery. The winery attracted international attention in the middle of the 19th century and the wines achieved highest prices at auctions. The wines were appreciated by the German Imperial and English royal families. In 1985, a 1921 "Bernkasteler Doctor Trockenbeerenauslese" from Bernkasteler was auctioned off for 11,100 marks at a rarity auction of the VDP in Trier. The winery is managed in the eleventh generation of the family by the great-granddaughter Sofia Thanisch (with four generations of women).
The vineyards comprise six hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Alte Badstube am Doctorberg, Doctor (there has been a property here since the beginning of the 18th century) and Lay in Bernkastel. They are exclusively planted with Riesling, which is predominantly root-true. The wines are individually vinified according to variety and origin in small containers, fruit-sweet, fine-tangy or dry. The winery is a founding member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
