The winery is located in the community of Bernkastel-Kues (Saarallee 24) in the German Mosel wine region. The winegrowing tradition of the family goes back to the year 1636. The Prussian member of parliament Dr. Hugo Thanisch is considered the actual founder of the winery. The winery attracted international attention in the middle of the 19th century and the wines achieved highest prices at auctions. In November 1985, a 1921 Trockenbeerenauslese was auctioned for 11,200 marks by the VDP in Trier. Through inheritance division in 1988 there is also a winery Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch. The part "Erben Müller-Burggraef" is owned by Margrit Müller-Burggraef, a granddaughter of Hugo Thanisch. The vineyards comprise nine hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Doctor, Graben and Lay (Bernkastel), Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr(Brauneberg), Himmelreich (Graach), Niederberg-Helden (Lieser), and Sonnenuhr (Wehlen). They are 98% Riesling and some Pinot Noir. The 300 year old cellar is located 30 meters below the Doctorberg. Bottled sparkling wine is also produced.
