2020 Bingen Scharlachberg Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs, Rheinhessen, Germany

Quite firm, somewhat toasty and slightly smoky, alcoholic aroma of partly dried and preserved predominantly dark fruits with distinctly earthy notes, malt, bitter chocolate as well as herbal and floral nuances. Ripe, somewhat compote, sweetish fruit, smoky and toasty wood spice, some liquorice, fine sandy, a touch drying tannin, lots of alcohol, a little Mediterranean character, not very deep, bitter chocolate in the background, coffee beans, slightly peppery, good, to very good, alcoholic, sweetish and again slightly drying finish. Lacks subtlety, depth and polish.
