The municipal appellation is located as an enclave at the southern end of the Mâconnais area in Burgundy. However, it should not be confused with the Pouilly-Fumé area (main variety Sauvignon Blanc) on the Loire due to the similarity of its name. The Saint-Véran appellation is located to the south. The vineyards cover 760 hectares in the four communes of Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson. Site names may be used (but there are no Grand Cru or Premier Cru sites). The region in eastern France covers 32,000 km². The capital is Dijon, but the wine capital is Beaune.
