2016 Sauvignon Blanc "Baer", Pfalz, Germany

Firm, somewhat smoky, woody-spicy and delicately bacony nose, citrus fruit, some gooseberries and redcurrants, pomaceous fruit, lots of bay leaf, other soup herbs, delicate waxy notes and some tobacco ash. Tart and again quite firm in the mouth, smoky and nutty wood tones, herbal flavours, also celery and parsley root, fine acid bite and slightly sandy grip, dense and persistent, clear, salty-chalky minerality, certain ashy bitterness, tobacco and black berry notes, earthy tones, very good, firm, a little smoky, only a little tannin-dry finish. Not entirely certain prognosis: either it will slowly wear out, or it will gain more juice with time; the substance would be there.

Editor note: Clearly vegetal, reminiscent of fennel, also nutty, woody and slightly smoky aroma with flavours of ripe yellow fruits, some root vegetables and mineral hints. Ripe, slightly warm yellow fruit with vegetal, smoky, nutty and somewhat buttery aromas, crumbly tannin and calm acidity, lasting, good substance, bacony nuances in the background, a hint of dark berries, also tobacco, good substance and depth, some warmth, quite distinct minerality, very good, tart, grippy, still a touch drying finish with nutty to tobacco wood notes and vegetal tones.
