The red wine estate Jean Stodden is located in the municipality of Rech in the German wine region of Ahr. The traditional family has been growing grapes in the Ahr valley since 1578. From 1900 Alois Stodden began to press his Pinot Noir himself. Gerhard Stodden led the company to the German top from the mid 1980s. He is considered one of the pioneers for this grape variety. Today the estate is managed by his son Alexander Stodden, who is trained as an oenologist. The mostly steep slopes comprise 6.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Rosenthal (Ahrweiler), Burggarten and Hardtberg (Dernau), Sonnenberg (Neuenahr), Mönchberg (Mayschoß), as well as Hardtberg and Herrenberg (Rech). They are planted to 88% with Pinot Noir, 5% Riesling and the rest with Frühburgunder and Dornfelder. Quality criteria are reduced yields through appropriate pruning and thinning out (green harvest), selective manual harvesting with the aim of healthy and ripe grapes, as well as careful processing. The white wines are mainly aged in stainless steel, the red wines at least 16 months in new barriques and partly in large wooden barrels. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wines (Riesling, Pinot Noir) and noble brandies are also produced. The winery has been a member of the VDP since 2005.
