The regional appellation extends along both banks of the Rhône for over 200 kilometres from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. The classification was already granted in 1937. It covers some areas of the northern and large parts of the southern section of the Rhône. This is why this appellation is sometimes used as a synonym for the whole Rhône valley. The vineyards cover 42,000 hectares of vineyards in the six départements of Ardèche, Drôme, Gard, Loire, Rhône and Vaucluse. The red grape variety comes from France. Synonyms are Aubon, Caula, Conese, Coneze, Connoges, Connoise, Counèse, Counoïse, Counoïso, Counoueiso, Grosse Rogettaz, Guénoise, Quenoise and Rivier. It must not be confused with the related and morphologically similar Aubun (with which it is often mixed in older vineyards and shares the synonym Grosse Rogettaz). The medium to late ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. It produces acidic, peppery red wines, especially for blending. It is a very old variety from the Rhône, which was already mentioned in Avignon in 1626.
