The DO area named after the municipality of the same name is located in the west of the Spanish region of La Mancha. It was only classified in 2005. The vineyards cover 1,500 hectares of vineyards in the two provinces of Cuenca and Toledo. The DO only applies to red wines that may be made from the authorised varieties Cencibel (Tempranillo), Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

The red grape variety originates from Spain and belongs to the group of Garnacha varieties (see there for its ancestry). There are well over a hundred synonyms that indicate the great age and the wide distribution of the vine in many countries.
