Description to Scotland
Scotland, with its capital Edinburgh, covers 77,910 square kilometres and is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It lies to the north of the main British island and borders England to the south. Scotland also includes several archipelagos. To the west are the Hebrides (3,071 km²), off the northern coast are the Orkney Islands (990 km²) and much further away are the Shetland Islands (1,466 km²). Scotland is best known for its distinctive whisky culture. The moderately cold climate with unstable weather is not suitable for viticulture. In the Atlantic regions, it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Temperatures are lower than in the rest of the UK. Climate change may favour viticulture. Initial trials have been carried out on two hectares of vines.
