Description to Savuto DOC
DOC area for red wine, rosé and (only since 2011) white wine in the Italian region of Calabria. The zone includes parts of the municipalities of Aiello Calabro, Altilia, Amantea, Belsito, Carpanzano, Cleto, Grimaldi, Malito, Marzi, Pedivigliano, Rogliano, Santo Stefano di Rogliano, Scigliano and Serra d'Aiello in the province of Cosenza, Conflenti, Martirano, Martirano Lombardo, Motta Santa Lucia, Nocera Terinese and San Mango d'Aquino in the province of Catanzaro. The Classico area for Rosso and Rosato includes the municipalities of Aiello Calabro, Altilia, Amantea, Belsito, Carpanzano, Cleto, Grimaldi, Malito, Marzi, Pedivigliano, Rogliano, Scigliano and Serra d'Aiello in the province of Cosenza. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Savuto River, which gives the wine its name, and on the Tyrrhenian coast, in some very steep, mountainous areas. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated followed by the name of the vineyard.
The Bianco is made from Mantonico = Montonico Bianco? (max. 40%), Chardonnay (max. 30%), Greco Bianco (max. 20%), Malvasia Bianca di Candia (max. 10%), and other authorised varieties (max. 45%). Rosso (also as Superiore) and Rosato are produced from the varieties Arvino Nero = Gaglioppo (max. 45%), Aglianico (max. 45%), Greco Nero (possibly different varieties) and Nerello Cappuccio (max. 10%), as well as other authorised varieties (max. 45%).
