The winery is located in the town of Deidesheim in the Pfalz wine-growing region. It was founded in 1849 by Friedrich Deinhard from the sparkling wine dynasty of the same name and his wife Auguste Jordan. His son Dr. Andreas Deinhard (1845-1907) took over in 1871 and developed it into one of the most important quality wine estates in Germany. Through his parliamentary activities in the Bavarian Landtag and the Reichstag, he had a major influence on the phylloxera law and the first German wine law. He rendered great service to Palatinate viticulture, among other things as co-founder of the German Winegrowers' Association.
After him, his son-in-law Leopold von Winning (1873-1917) ran the winery under the name "Von Winning'sches Edelweingut". In 1907, the latter dedicated himself to the task of producing great wines to do justice to these special sites. Through meticulous work, he raised the wines of the winery to a new level. He was also a founding member of the VDP (then the Association of German Natural Wine Auctioneers). After his death, it was taken over by the Hoch family, who reintroduced the old name "Dr. Deinhard". Finally, in 2007, the business was acquired by the Neustadt entrepreneur Achim Niederberger and a change was made to the current name. Stephan Attmann is responsible as managing director, Joachim Jaillet as field manager and Kurt Rathgeber as cellar master. The team is committed to the legacy of the visionary Leopold von Winning. The Niederberger family also runs the "LEOPOLD Restaurant".
The vineyards cover 64 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Nussbien, Linsenbusch and Reiterpfad (Ruppertsberg), Grainhübel, Herrgottsacker, Kalkofen, Kieselberg, Langenmorgen, Leinhöhle, Mäushöhle, Nonnenstück and Paradiesgarten (Deidesheim), as well as Jesuitengarten, Kirchenstück, Pechstein and Ungeheuer (Forst). They are 80% planted with Riesling, the rest with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Scheurebe as well as Pinot Noir. These are cultivated as they were 100 years ago in dense planting with 9,500 vines/hectare. Natural, sustainable viticulture is practised. This includes, among other things, short- and long-term cover crop as well as the renunciation of herbicides, artificial fertilisers and (in the vineyard and in the cellar) copper.
Traditional methods are used in the cellar. Pumping is avoided in the gentle processing. There are two different product lines. The wines of the "Dr. Deinhard" line are classically vinified in stainless steel, fresh and fruity. The wines of the "Von Winning" line are traditionally fermented in wood and vinified in a structured and spicy manner. After gentle pre-clarification, the top wines ferment spontaneously with natural yeasts warm in wood without artificial cooling. They are generally stored for a long time on the fine ye ast or full yeast and are bottled without fining after moderate filtration. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP. Around 500,000 bottles of wine are marketed annually.
