The winery is located in the municipality of Billigheim (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of
Pfalz. It was founded in 1906 by Ernst and Minna Nuss. Today, the company consists of two business branches, namely winegrowing and an attached restaurant. It is managed by Brigitte Schneiderfritz, Dipl. Ing (FH) Martin Schneiderfritz is the cellar master, and Michael Schneiderfritz is responsible for marketing and the restaurant. Due to the takeover of the neighbouring winery in 2013, the vineyards now cover 13.4 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Rosenberg, Sauschwänzel and Venusbuckel (Billigheim), Steingebiss (Appenhofen), Pfaffenberg (Ingenheim), Mandelpfad (Rohrbach) and Mütterle (Wollmesheim). They are planted with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Dornfelder, Dunkelfelder and Portugieser, as well as the white wine varieties Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer
The philosophy is:
best quality and typicality, always looking for improvements - detached from short-lived trends. The quality pyramid consists of three lines. The "Grey Line" forms the basis, the "Red Line" comprises wines from traditional grape varieties, some of which are specified by location, and the "Black Line" with the top growths from the best vineyards, some of which are very old, with a maximum yield of 5,000 litres per hectare. The white wines are largely
matured in steel tanks, with experiments being carried out with
spontaneous fermentation and the
use of barriques. The red wines are generally fermented on the skins. The Pinot Noir is matured in large wooden barrels and in some cases for up to 24 months in barrique. The premium wines are the spontaneously fermented Riesling "Venusbuckel" with long yeast storage (4,500 l/ha) as well as the Francophile Pinot Noir "Venusbuckel" from 40-year-old, densely berried vines, which matures after nine days of mash fermentation in barriques made mostly of Palatinate oak (4,000 l/ha). Bottle-fermented sparkling wine and grape juice are also produced. The winery is a member of the Generation Riesling association
