The winery is located in the municipality of Birkweiler (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The winery was established by Franz and Ulrike Gies in 1976. Since 1999, it has been run by the fourth generation of the family, Volker Gies, who trained as a viticultural technician. From the tasting room you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the majority of the vineyards. These cover 22 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyards Kastanienbusch, Mandelberg and Rosenberg (Birkweiler), Seligmacher (Ranschbach), Latt (Albersweiler), Kalmit (Ilbesheim), and Im Sonnenschein (Siebeldingen).
Riesling is the farm's leading variety and dominates with one third of the vineyard area, mainly on Rotliegend (slate, granite, red claystone), Buntsandstein and Kalktertiär. Other white wine varieties cultivated are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Chardonnay and Viognier, while the red wine varieties are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Dorio and Cabernet Cubin. In the vineyards, natural, environmentally friendly viticulture is practised. Great importance is attached to short pruning, defoliation, thinning out and selective harvesting of ripe grapes.
In the technically modernised cellar with several levels, gentle processing takes place. Only the red wines are matured in barriques. Especially for the main red wine variety, Pinot Noir, slightly larger barrels are used so that the wood note does not become too dominant. In order to preserve the natural fruit, the Pinot Noirs are removed from the mash after no more than twelve days of fermentation. Site designations are only used for the upper quality lines of the four grape varieties Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. A large proportion of these white single-vineyard wines are matured in large, used wooden barrels. A Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay sparkling wine is also produced using traditional bottle fermentation. The winery is a member of the "Südpfalz ConneXion" association.
