The winery is located in the community of Birkweiler (area Südliche Weinstraße) in the German wine growing region Palatinate. The estate was established by Franz and Ulrike Gies in 1976. Since 1999, it has been run by the fourth generation of the family, Volker Gies, who was trained as a viticultural technician. From the tasting room you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of most of the vineyards. These comprise 22 hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Kastanienbusch, Mandelberg and Rosenberg (Birkweiler), Seligmacher (Ranschbach), Latt (Albersweiler), Kalmit (Ilbesheim), as well as Im Sonnenschein (Siebeldingen).

The Riesling is the leading variety of the estate and dominates with one third of the vineyard area mainly on Rotliegend (slate, granite, red claystone), red sandstone and calcareous tertiary. As further white wine varieties Weißburgunder(Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder(Pinot Gris), Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Chardonnay and Viognier are cultivated, as red wine varieties Spätburgunder(Pinot Noir), Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Dorio and Cabernet Cubin. In the vineyard, natural, environmentally friendly viticulture is practised. Great importance is attached to short pruning, defoliation, thinning out and selective harvesting of ripe grapes.

In the technically modernised cellar with several levels, gentle processing is carried out. Only the red wines are aged in . Especially for the main red wine variety Pinot Noir, somewhat larger barrels are used to prevent the wood note from becoming too dominant. In order to preserve the natural fruit, the Spätburgunder are removed from the mash after a maximum of twelve days of full fermentation. Site names are only used for the upper quality lines of the four grape varieties Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. A large part of these white site wines are aged in large, used wooden barrels. A Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay sparkling wine with traditional bottle fermentation is also produced. The winery is a member of the association "Südpfalz ConneXion".
